The Great Patriotic War began on June 22, 1941, when the Germans invaded teh Soviet Union. Over 10 million Soviet soldiers took part in the war and those of about 12,600 earned the Soviet UnionĀ“s highest military award - the Hero of the Soviet Union - for deeds of great daring and self sacrifice. This book covers the male recipients of the Hero of the Soviet Union award during the Great Patriotic War.
Snipers, fighter pilots, partisans and spies are all covered including Richard Sorge, the master spy, and Vasily Zaitsev, the most famous Soviet Sniper of the Great Patriotic War.

A nice read by Henry Sadaika with excellent illustrations by Christina Hook this book examines those individuals classified as 'Heroes of the Soviet Union'. This is the highest award either a Soviet citizen or a foreigner could receive in fighting for the USSR. This book covers the usual service arms but also adds partisans and spies. There were a predominance of Russians and Ukranians who received the award with other races and certain religions hardly featuring at all. It examines in some detail the military careers of aviators Mikail Deyvataev , Ivan Drachenko , Sultan Amat-Khan , Sergy Lukanski and Pavel Plotnikov. It looks at snipers such as Fyodor Ohlopkov , Ivan Sidorenko and Vasily Zaltsev. Tank drivers , Naval troops , Spies and Infatrymen are given similar treatment. For propoganda purposes some of the achievements of these brave men may have been a little exaggerated during the war but this book reflects on the real story without the hype leaving the reader in no doubt that these were true heroes in every sense.
