In this book by Joseph N.Mueller in the Campaign series the standard outline is followed but then the focus in largely month by month rarther than on an individual battle or action. The Marine landings are initially examined followed by the bloody battles for survival from August through to November 1943. The part the U.S Navy played in the battle is also covered and so too is the relief brought by the U.S.Army who replaced the tired Marines bringing this bloody but decisive campaign to its end. A good and pretty comprehensive overview giving credit to all arms of the military involved in this struggle. In some accounts of the battle the reader is almost led to believe that the Marines fought Guadalcanal alone ! The Japanese side of the story is also not neglected.
