Jon Latimer tells the story of the recconaissance in force which the British response to the Italian invasion of Egypt in 1940 started off as but resulted in a gain of 500 miles of Libyan coastline including Tobruk. It occured at a time when British ground victories were few and far between. The consequence of Operation Compass was Italian defeat and the arrival in North Africa of Rommel and the Afrika Korps to aid Hitler's ailing Axis ally.
