This book by Ken Ford looks at the last great 'stand up' fight of World War II. It was brutal to the extreme. Eisenhower's 'broad front' policy involved taking the whole of the Rhineland before pushing his troops across the Rhine and into Germany itself. By flooding the terrain [opening the Roer dams] the Germans caused the Allies to drastically change tactics. The costly battles that followed were characterised by amphibious assaults on fortified villages in the flooded Rhine lowlands , frontal assaults against the much vaunted Siegfried line and grim fighting in the Reichswald forest. This battle has been called 'the last great killing ground in the West'. The book focuses on Operation Veritable , Operation Grenade , the final battle and the American drive to the Rhine.
