The War File: The Desert War Desert10

Run Time: 55 minutes

This is the story of Erwin Rommel--the Desert Fox of legend--and his battles with General Montgomery for control of North Africa. Sent with his specially trained Afrika Korps to stem the Italian retreat, Rommel succeeded in driving the British back into Egypt--at one point penetrating to within 66 miles of Alexandria. The fighting ebbed and flowed across North Africa in 1941 and 1942, until the great British victory at El Alamein in November 1942 forced Rommel to retreat towards Tunisia and eventually from North Africa. The events of the Desert War were central to the outcome of the entire Second World War. This program features rare archival footage, informative maps and graphics, and an interview with the Rt Hon Viscount Montgomery of El Alamein CBE. Narrated by Michael Leighton.
